The national event, which is being run by The National Lottery and ITV, supported by the British Olympic Association, will see K2 open for a day of events and taster sessions, most of them free of charge.

A statement from K2 said: “The day will be jam-packed with free events (many with free coaching), including; athletics, bowls, fencing, squash, tennis, judo and platform diving to name just a few - and you can pretend to be Nekoda Smythe-Davis or Tom Daley for the day.

“Free family badminton will also be on offer, with the chance to win one of 10 sets of rackets and shuttlecocks.

“Plus, children can swim free with a paying adult, take part in Olympic quizzes and view a fun Olympic display.

“High Sports will be offering 10 minute climbing tasters on the wall at K2 Crawley, (£5). Meanwhile, at nearby picturesque Tilgate Park, Dynamic Adventures will have kayaks and mountain bikes available to hire, whilst a Crawley Wellbeing fitness instructor will be on hand at the Outdoor Gym in Tilgate Park, to offer advice on getting the best out of the free equipment there.

“This fun day for all is a great way for everyone to get involved with a little physical activity in a relaxed environment, as well as giving people the opportunity to try out some of the much-loved sports, many of which they may be watching right now on TV in the Olympic Games in Rio.

Freedom Leisure MD Ivan Horsfall Turner said: “Freedom Leisure are extremely proud to be supporting the ‘I Am Team GB Sports Day’, because not only are we incredibly proud of our team out in Rio, but also of the local communities our centres serve! This day is the opportunity for our centres to open their doors and welcome in local residents who may not have tried these activities before.”

Crawley’s deputy Mayor, Cllr Brian Quinn will himself be taking part from 10am, while ITV will encourage attendance by switching off transmission for an hour at 9.30am, across all seven of its TV channels.
