Burgess Hill town market is set for a comeback

After a hiatus of more than two decades a town market is set to return to Burgess Hill.

The town had a thriving market up until the mid-1990s with people coming from across Sussex to visit it.

Now under the Town Council’s Bridge-the-Gap initiative, approved prior to lockdown, the town market is set for a come-back.

Council leader Robert Eggleston said: “Residents have been calling for the revival of the town market for some time and I am delighted that the town council can deliver on their wish and for us to fulfil a key promise.

“This is one of several measures we are rolling out to improve the town centre economy.”

The inaugural market is being held on Saturday September 12 from 9am to 2pm. Councillor Matthew Cornish, who chaired the open market working party added: “This is the culmination of a huge amount of work from councillors and officers over the last six months. We are offering a range of sustainable local foods and goods with something for the whole family to come and enjoy.”

“Everyone knows the high street is a challenging environment right across the country.

Burgess Hill Town Council will be doing everything it can to bring more people to the town over the coming months and the town market is just one way that we will be supporting the town centre.”

The market will be located along Church Walk and The Martlets.
