Introducing children to world of work

Are you a business guru with a few hours to spare who could help find the next generation of Apprentices?

If so, Young Enterprise is running a series of workshops to introduce school children to the world of work.

Over June and July events will be held at Lancing College and Steyning Grammar School.

Volunteer entrepreneurs and business people are needed to help out with a fast-paced game.

Called “Sell for Success” the young people will work in teams to sell a product while being advised by business volunteers.

These opportunities are being advertised on the Skillshare West Sussex website, which is a project promoted by West Sussex County Council.

The website links up skilled volunteers and organisations looking to give their staff time off to help in the community with opportunities.

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader who is responsible for Communities, Environment and Enterprise, said: “The Skillshare project is part of our active commitment to support third sector organisations and to promote volunteering. It is a good opportunity to encourage skills and knowledge sharing in West Sussex bringing a significant impact to those participating in the scheme.”

The site focuses on short term volunteering opportunities of between one day and two weeks duration. Voluntary organisations, community groups and social enterprises can use it to advertise their volunteering opportunities and these can be matched against the skills and availability of registered organisations and individuals.

Kate Scales, Development Manager at Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester, said: “There are a whole host of opportunities available and there really is something to suit everyone, from budding Lord Sugars to gardeners or drivers with a bit of time to spare.

“This scheme aims to attract a new audience to volunteering and to support local companies with employee volunteering schemes to find placements for their staff. And as the slogan says... giving a little means a lot! Why not sign up today?”

The scheme has been designed to run alongside the service provided by the Volunteer Centres, but to focus on short term opportunities. The site also allows organisations to showcase their volunteering achievements and publish examples of their Corporate Social Responsibility policies.

Local scout troops, environmental groups and care-related organisations have been quick to spot the benefits that will flow from having strong links to skilled volunteers. These groups have already posted numerous short term volunteering opportunities on the Skillshare website including, logo design, fundraising help, support to find speakers and volunteers to help marshal one-off events. The number of opportunities is growing week by week.
