The £75million Highways England project is, say officials, designed to improve the busy road from Polegate to Lewes, which suffers from congestion due to the narrow carriageway and low capacity at junctions.

A Highways England spokesperson said, “The aim is to address safety, capacity, sustainability and accessibility issues on this stretch of the A27.

“We also aim to reduce travel time and improve journey time reliability along the A27 section, promote modes of travel and behaviours which minimise traffic and congestion, provide safer roads, connect communities currently separated by the route, improve accessibility for all users into the South Downs National Park and minimise the impact on natural environment.”

One of the first phases of work will be on the A27 eastbound within the A2270 junction – Polegate traffic lights – from 8pm on Monday June 29 until 6am on Tuesday June 30.

The roundabout at Drusillas will also be widened in the coming months and a walking and cycle path established. Work is expected to go on until 2022.
