The covid-19 pandemic has thrown a unique set of challenges at our thriving local businesses, and they have responded in kind.

This includes setting up takeaway and delivery services, introducing social distancing measures, and following strict new guidelines to keep everyone safe.

Meanwhile, here is a list of some of the local eateries which have reopened, and how they have adapted to our much-changed world.

• East 22, London cafe, 22 Seaside Road has reopened for takeaway only. Serving pie and mash, sausage rolls, quiches, samosas baguettes, fresh coffee and milkshakes. Open Tuesday to Saturday between 10.30am to 3.30pm. Social distancing applies, only two people in at any time.

• Favo Loso on Carlisle Road has reopened for takeaway service. Ice creams, cold and hot drinks, food.

• Early Bird Cafe, Winston Crescent. Open for takeaway from 9am to 2pm Monday to Friday.

• Eats and Treats, Meads Street. Offering contact-free delivery and collections on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10am-3pm. Afternoon teas, family sharing boxes, children’s options, cupcakes, brownies, milkshakes, coffee and more.

Carters Family Fish and Chips, Winston Crescent. New opening times 5pm-8pm. Onlny two in the shop at a time, with social distancing and protective measures in place. Phone orders welcome: 07975 681007

Perfectly Brewed has reopened for takeaway coffee, tea, soft drink, sandwiches and snacks. It is in the Enterprise Shopping Centre, with an outside door. 10 per cent discount on drinks to frontline workers, including train and bus staff.

The Filling Station in Brassey Avenue, Hampden Park, has reopened with its usual menu plus afternoon tea available for takeaway. Opening hours are 5.30am-2pm.

The Red Lion Willingdon is starting a takeaway service again from June 3. See their facebook page @RedLionWillingdon for a menu.

The Art House coffee shop in Grove Road has been open for the past six weeks. It is now offering a delivery and collection service for all pre ordered / pre paid food and cakes and ‘has been supported really well by our lovely customers’.

Coffee and Carrot in Cornfield Road has started a home delivery service of essential items. They have also reopened for takeaway only from 9.30am-2pm and will continue to revise these hours. Visit coffeeandcarrot.com for more info.

Downtown Deli in Carlisle Road has recently reopened. The New York-inspired deli has new covid-screens and distance tape to help protect customers and staff when inside collecting their food. They have a two customer-only policy inside the shop.

Nelson Coffee is reopening from Friday (May 29). They will be offering takeaway coffee, iced drinks, breakfast rolls, sandwiches and more. Open five days a week (closed Monday and Tuesday) from 10am-2pm.
