The campaign has, at the time of writing, raised £280 and Northgate Primary School librarian Dr Natasha Dunn was thrilled with the amount of money donated so far.

She said: "We are thrilled with and so grateful for the generous donations from Northgate parents.

"It is so wonderful to know our community values the library as much as we do and wants to contribute to the creation of a wonderful space to encourage a love of reading."

Reading for pleasure has been a sanctuary for many throughout the lockdown.

Almost two thirds of children say that reading helped them feel better, and half say that it has encouraged them to dream about the future.

And Dr Dunn stressed that reading is 'crucial to children's mental well-being' during these difficult times.

She added: "Encouraging reading is more important now than ever.

"Books can offer the children a place to switch off from their worries, they can be a source of comfort, of fun and of laughter.

"They are crucial to children’s mental well-being as well as being a huge benefit to their learning."

The renovation of the libraries will benefit the children of the community now and for generations to come.

Dr Dunn said: "The new library will give the message to the children and to our wider community that reading is important and that as a school we value books and reading.

"For future students, the library will become a lasting legacy to encourage them to read and to show them that reading is at the heart of everything we do at Northgate.

"If we can instil a love of reading in our children while they are school age, it will stay with them for life."
