Tykes Pre-School, in Tilgate, had been told it needed to improve following its last inspection, but the professionalism and commitment of the team were counted by Ofsted among the reasons for its higher rating.

The pre-school was visited by inspector Janet Thouless on October 5 and her findings were published on October 29 – two weeks after Tykes’ Broadfield branch was judged to have made similar progress.

In her report, Ms Thouless said: “The pre-school is led and managed well. For example, the management team is committed to constantly reviewing their practice, evaluating their service and improving the outcomes for children. Since the last inspection, this has enabled them to effectively target key areas for development to raise the quality of teaching and learning.”

Tykes manager Jane Bond-Roberts said the pre-school had built up a “really strong team” which had addressed previous issues raised by Ofsted. She said West Sussex County Council had helped with the progress, carrying out random checks to ensure Tykes was on track.

A couple of points were highlighted for improvement – which Jane described as “so minor it’s a shame they were there”.

Looking to the future, Jane said: “Without a doubt we’re on our way to ‘outstanding’. This is where we’re supposed to be and we’re over the moon.”
