Our Lady Queen of Heaven School, in Langley Green, saw 89 per cent of its 10-and-11-year-olds make the grade when it came to their Key Stage 2 results in reading, writing and maths.

The result was well above the national average and continued the school’s steady improvement over the past few years. In 2012, only 60 per cent of Our Lady (OLQOH) children were able to reach the expected level.

A school spokesman said: “Clearly, the league tables are a blunt way of judging how a school is doing; what makes schools such as OLQOH such a special community to be a part of, cannot simply be judged by examination results.”

Chairman of governors, Fr Chris Dobson said: “We are delighted to share the excellent news that OLQOH was the second highest ranked school in Crawley borough last year.

“By comparison, OLQOH ranked in the bottom quartile of Crawley schools in 2012/13, improving to seventh in 2013/14, validating the hard work and dedication of so many children, teachers, parents and governors, over the past few years.

“Well done everyone!”

Top spot went to Milton Mount Primary, in Pound Hill, with 90 per cent; while Broadfield East Juniors were third with 86 per cent, and Langley Green Primary was fourth with 84 per cent.

On the outskirts of town, Turners Hill Primary also scored 90 per cent and Crawley Down Village scored 84 per cent.

Bottom of the pile were West Green Primary, with 45 per cent and Waterfield Primary, in Bewbush, with 50 per cent.
