Two freezers secured from Unilever by leader of the council Robert Eggleston were delivered on June 8 to the YMCA thanks to the generous use of a van and drivers from Handcross Butchers.

The freezers will be used by the charity to store food, supporting 19 young people in Burgess Hill.

“With the help of Burgess Hill based Consort Frozen Foods we were able to get freezers from Unilever and I am delighted that we are to give two freezers to our local YMCA to help them provide a wider range of food.

“Our thanks are also due to Handcross Butchers for helping with the transportation.”

Mary Cooke, YMCA Downslink Group, support worker at West Sussex Transitional Housing, Burgess Hill, added: “The team at the YMCA Mid Sussex Transitional project in Burgess Hill, part of YMCA DownsLink Group, are very grateful to accept a donation of two freezers organised by Burgess Hill Town Council and delivered by Handcross Butchers.

“YMCA DownsLink Group supports young homeless people in the area by finding them homes and supporting their needs until they become independent.

“The project in Burgess Hill relies on donations throughout the year, one of which is Fare Share Foods.”

She said it can be ‘very difficult’ to store donations of fresh food for when it is most needed.

Mary added: “With the generous donation of the freezers this will now be able to happen.

“We can then use the fresh food in an emergency to give to the young people we support.”

A spokesman for Handcross Village Butchers said: “We are pleased we were able to work with the Town Council to support YMCA Downslink Group and support for young people in our community.”
