1. Boxgrove Man
When excavations began in 1982 at the Eartham quarry site near Boxgrove, flint tools dating back 500,000 years old were discovered, which at that time was the oldest evidence of humans ever discovered in the UK. Then in 1993/95 500,000 year old early human fossils were found there, the oldest such fossils ever discovered in the UK. 2. 2,000-year-old Iron Age warrior
A 2,000-year-old Iron Age warrior of 'international significance' was discovered 13 years ago in Berkeley Homes' Bersted Park development, in the most elaborately equipped warrior grave ever found in England. The mysterious warrior may have fought alongside King Commius during Julius Caesar's wars with the Gauls.
3. 1,000 year old skeleton
The remains of a man thought to have been executed 1,000 years ago were uncovered near Shoreham in 2018. The skeleton dating back to the 11th Century was found during excavation work on the South Downs for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, with the body showing signs of a traumatic death.
4. Fishbourne Roman Palace
The Roman Palace was discovered by accident in 1960, during the digging of
a water main trench that cut through mosaic floors and massive wall
foundations. Today, visitors can see the remains of the north wing of the palace, with its fine mosaic floors, as well as many other important finds. Photo: Steve Robards
