Many animals struggle to regulate heat in the summer, often preferring to stay in the shady parts of the garden, be soothed by a gentle breeze and avoiding pavements that are too hot to handle.

Dr Julia Mewes, senior vet and owner at The Mewes Vets, which has branches in Haywards Heath and Rottingdean, has some handy tips for keeping your pets safe, as well as a super free-to-enter summer competition that’s got to be the coolest thing in town!

She was speaking just days after The Mewes Vets was named one of the Top 25 Best UK Vets, after thousands of reviews left by customers from practices around the country were studied.

Staying safe

Julia said: “Just like in humans, some animals can tolerate the heat more than others. We recommend you making sure you have things to hand to keep your pet comfortable. Of course, make sure there’s plenty of cool, fresh water to hand, and some even like to snack on ice cubes!

“Pet-friendly ice cream is another nice occasional treat, but keeping cool, dark spaces for them to rest in, and avoiding over-exercising in the heat of the day is definitely advisable. Pets can easily burn their paws on pavements in just a few minutes.

“You may wish to book older or vulnerable pets in for a health check if you have concerns.”

About the competition

One lucky reader will win the summer pet kit of their choice – the winner can choose either the dog or the cat prize.

There will be a cool mat, a water bottle, some treats and a copy of one of Julia’s own books, Caring for the Older Cat or Caring for Dogs with Mobility Issues. If the winning owner has a dog then a paddling pool is included in the prize, while for a feline winner there will be a water fountain.

About the award

Reflecting on winning the award, Julia said: “We feel very privileged to have been awarded our fourth award over just five years. It demonstrates our team’s passion for delivering the kind of service that we would like our own pets to receive.”

Susie Samuel, CEO of VetHelpDirect, explains: “The BestUKVets Awards were established 11 years ago to reward vet practices that delight their pet-owning clients. We are so pleased that The Mewes Vets has been recognised again, and local pet owners should be reassured that their pets are in very safe hands.”
