Crawley Carnival in 1980 was certainly a fancy dress affair.
These pictures were published in the Crawley & District Observer on Friday May 30 and show a selection of the floats.
The gun-toting Thomas Bennett Bonnie and Clyde gangsters were, from left: Jane Brindle, Jackie Bentley, Janine Steptoe and Paula Cave.
The youngsters brandishing the ‘stop’ signs were on a float put together by the Crawley Round Table and Ladies’ Circle.
There’s more than a hint of St Trinian’s about them. Whatever they were supposed to be, they won the Best Comic Float award!
The ladies and gents from the Centaur Club won second prize in the Adult Organisation category with their bar-room scene.
First prize went to the guys and gals from Sainsbury’s Social Club whose Wild West saloon impressed the judges.
The Wild West theme continued with the entry from BOC Social Club.
Their float showed Roger Palmer, as a Native American, waving what was hopefully a plastic tomahawk at Margaret Brown.
