One property with two addresses - the 15th century Rye home set to go under the hammer

Among Rye’s many attractive streets, perhaps the most picturesque is Mermaid Street - a cobbled lane with a plethora of medieval timber-framed properties and elegant Georgian houses.

Oak Corner, encompassed by an abundance of history, is Grade II listed and one of the oldest buildings in Rye, dating back 600 years.

Originally two cottages, the property boasts two addresses - one on Mermaid Street and the other Traders Passage. Fortunately for the new purchaser though, they will not be billed twice for council tax!

A pebble throw from the residence is the famous Mermaid Inn. This fascinating building has a long and turbulent history laced with sieges, ghosts, fugitives and secret passages.

The Mermaid Inn was burnt to the ground by the French in 1377 and only the cellar survived. This is also the reason why Oak Corner was rebuilt in the 1400s.

The inn was featured in an episode of the Most Haunted TV series and has played host to a long list of famous guests. Some liked this charming inn so much, they decided to stick around, giving The Mermaid the reputation of being one of the most haunted inns in the UK.

Connect UK Auctions is privileged to offer Oak Corner at our next land and property auction on September 15. To learn more about selling through auction, please visit Connect UK Auctioneers.
