A funny thing happened at Ifield Golf Club in 1983 – well, quite a few funny things, actually.
When you let the likes of Bernard Cribbens, Max Bygraves and Eric Sykes loose, anything can happen.
Bernard and the gang were teeing off in the Eric Sykes Golf Classic, in aid of the Sparks Fund, which financed research into crippling childhood diseases.
While the day itself was a laugh, they took the cause seriously and raised an impressive £5,000.
The jokes and the golf balls were flying as old Sykes puffed away on a huge cigar and Ifield captain Les Salter took the opportunity to mingle with the celebrities.
They included actress Ingrid Pitt, Match of the Day host Jimmy Hill, Coronation Street star William Roache, DJ Ed Stewart, actor Robin Askwith and comedian Jimmy Tarbuck.
Club manager Derek Howe described the day as “magnificent” and said he was “staggered” at the number of celebrities who showed up to play a round – or should that be to play around?
