100 years of jazz

A certain highlight of Chichester Jazz Club’s 21st season will be Richard Pite’s 100 Years of Jazz.

Club chairman Hugh Ashton said: “Band leader, drummer, bassist and sousaphone player, Richard has assembled the UK’s first musical presentation encompassing the history of jazz, from its beginnings in ragtime to the present day.

“This production has taken the UK jazz scene by storm and key to its enormous success is the choice of musicians, who all possess considerable experience right across the jazz spectrum. “These six multi-instrumental jazz virtuosi create a highly entertaining journey through the decades taking in everything from New Orleans to be bop, swing to latin, hot to cool, from Chicago and New York to around the world. An A to Z of jazz’s biggest names from Louis Armstrong to Joe Zawinul lives again in the ensemble’s brilliant recreations.

“What is clear from the performance is that the musicians love what they do, demonstrating their prowess on an impressive array of instruments. This enjoyment comes over between numbers too, as the music is interspersed with fascinating stories from the jazz archives as well as the inimitable humour of the band’s musical director Pete Long.

“With Richard (who also doubles on piccolo and theramin), will be the star-studded line-up of Pete Long on clarinet, saxophones, flute, piccolo and trumpet, Enrico Tomasso on trumpet, trombone and vocals, Nick Dawson on piano, clarinet, alto and vocals, Dave Chamberlain on double bass, guitar and piano, and Georgina Jackson on trumpet and vocals.”

The venue will be the Pallant Suite, South Pallant, Chichester, PO19 1SY on Friday, March 15 where the music starts at 7.45pm. Members and guests welcome. For more information, visit www.chichesterjazzclub.co.uk. Advance guest tickets on 01243 775888.
