Arias to help the Gambia

A top opera star is to sing at St Wilfrid’s Parish Church, Bognor Regis to raise money for the Gambia.

Diana Montague and her children Huw, Eleanor and Amelia will present a concert of arias from well-known operas and lighter music from films and musicals at the church on Saturday, July 21 beginning at 7pm.

Spokesman Lawrence Wood said: “This is a wonderfully-generous gesture by Diana. She is one of the most distinguished artists of her generation and her reputation was formed in the opera houses of Covent Garden London, the Metropolitan Opera New York, Rome Opera and Glyndebourne.

“She has performed on the concert platform and in the recording studio. Diana’s repertoire is vast and includes major roles in operas by Mozart, Gluck, Strauss, Rossini, Bellini and Berlioz. She has worked with English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Zurich Opera and the Cleveland Orchestra.

“This charity concert has been organised by Diana Montague’s brother, Stuart Montague. He manages the Aldwick House Care Home in Bognor Regis. Stuart is a supporter of The Gambia Upcountry Development Charity (GUD) - the brainchild of David and Janet Underwood - which seeks to support villagers in upcountry Gambia by providing a nursery school and then helping to fund the running costs.

“All the money raised through concerts such as the Aldwick House Charity Concert goes to help the villagers. The charity workers are all volunteers. These events are so important to maintain the support and encouragement that GUD gives to the Gambian villagers who struggle daily to meet their needs and move forward economically.

“The charity concert will bring wonderful music for all tastes as well as a chance to contribute towards the improvement in the lives of some of the poorest people in The Gambia.”
