Drowsy Chaperone - next challenge

Winner of five Tony Awards – including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Music and Best Lyrics – The Drowsy Chaperone is the next challenge for the Guildford School of Acting third-year musical-theatre students.

They present the show in the Mill Studio at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre until Saturday, February 9.

“To chase his blues away, a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as Man in Chair drops the needle on his favourite LP,” explains show spokeswoman Laura Butler.

“From the crackle of his hi-fi, the uproariously-funny 1928 musical magically bursts to life on stage, telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorus girl, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters, or are they pastry chefs?

“Man in Chair’s infectious love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to everybody who has ever been transported by the theatre.”

With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, and book by Bob Martin and Don McKellarson, the original Broadway production of The Drowsy Chaperone was produced by Kevin McCullum, Roy Miller, Bob Boyett, Stephanie McClelland, Barbara Freitag and Jill Furman.
