Hairdressers become builders for charity

YOUNG hairdressers from Southwater are ready to get their hands dirty in South Africa to help a charity run by Coco’s salon.

Over the past two years Coco’s salon, in Lintot square, has raised £4,000 for Coco’s foundation which sends young hairdressers to Ubombo, South Africa, to help local orphans.

17 hairdressers from the Southwater salon have already experienced the trip and three more plan to go this March but they have to raise £20,000 for the provisions they will use.

Debs Spraget, the salon’s director, said that the six week trip will allow them to work with other hairdressers to build a community hall/ chapel and other helpful structures.

She said: “There they learn to build reservoirs, chicken houses and shelters, providing the orphans with a better way to life through choice.

“For the teenagers placed in these situations this often becomes a life changing experience.”

The most recent fund raiser held by the Southwater salon was an Indian night at Tarana Restaraunt, in Turners Hill, where the staff raised £824.10.

Other chairty events have included quiz nights, curry nights, ladies pamper nights, sponsored walks, and clothes sales.

Debs said: “This money buys much needed school clothes and beds for the orphans.. Without school clothes they can’t go to school do it’s a vicious circle.”

Coco’s Foundation was set up in 2009 when two hairdressers from a Coco’s salon in Maidenbower decided to raise £10,000 to go to South Africa to build a trauma centre for orphans who have been sexually assaulted.

In just three years the charity has snowballed and now sends out hairdressers every year from all three branches of Coco’s in Maidenbower, Southwater and Billingshurst, as well as staff from other salons around the UK.
