You could always bank on Barklay for a laugh

Once upon a time, children in Crawley were invited to join a very special club – the Auntie Ivy Club.

No one knew what she looked like, just that she insisted club members live up to the motto ‘Be kind to animals’.

She would always wish club members a happy birthday – until they reached the age of 12, when they were given the boot.

The Auntie Ivy Club was a regular page in the Crawley & District Observer and, as well as sharing advice and opinions on topics such as stamp collecting, television and books, she shared the cartoon tales of her favourite dog – a rather large mutt who went by the name of Barklay.

Here’s a selection of his adventures from 1977.
