200 MORE HOMES

OUTLINE plans for two major housing developments in Uckfield have been approved. They are for 146 homes on land north of Mallard Drive and up to 61 homes at Sandpits, Lewes Road.

Both developers are being asked for contributions towards new nursery school places, provision of a new permanent waste and recycling site to serve Uckfield and the costs of improving the rights of way network around the town to accommodate the increased use.

They are also being asked for contributions towards Uckfield town centre improvements and accessibility improvements and provision of additional car parking spaces for the Uckfield Community Hospital.

Each is being asked to provide affordable homes within their development, 44 off Mallard Drive and up to 18 at Sandpits, though the total number of homes to be built there has not yet been specified.

East Sussex County Council's highways department opposed both applications because of traffic congestion in the town centre. It feared an 'unacceptable increase in existing safety hazards and unacceptable traffic conditions in an area that was already heavily congested at peak times'.

Outline approval was given to both plans by Wealden councillors on Thursday last week.
