Hide AdThe Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) held its first Sports and Entrepreneurship Awards at its Falmer campus.
Dylan Davies, the headteacher, welcomed hundreds of pupils and parents who packed the main hall: 'For me tonight is the culmination of the year and celebrates all that is best in our academy.'
A school in Woodingdean has won a national award from a key national body for their work helping children who have struggled with their reading.
Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery was named top school in the '˜Exceptional Strategic Management of Literacy in a School' category at the annual Institute of Education "Reading Recovery" awards in London.

Hide AdReading Recovery is a specialist programme that enables the lowest achieving children aged five or six to reach age-expected levels within 20 weeks. It involves one-to-one lessons for 30 minutes every day with a specially trained teacher.
Roadworks on the seafront are expected to drag on until the end of September.
Brighton and Hove City Council announced yesterday they have completed their investigations into the Kings Road collapse on April 25 but they expect work along the road to continue until September 30.
Six Brighton and Hove City Council apprentices have come together to raise awareness of apprenticeships in the city.

Hide AdThe new apprentice ambassadors are all apprentices at Brighton and Hove City Council and were brought together by the Council's Education and Inclusion department.
The aim is to promote the importance and availability of Apprenticeships to young people and parents/carers across the city, giving them the chance to find out about other career options.
The University of Brighton has received National Lottery funding allowing it to provide more sports to students across all campuses.

Hide AdStudents at the University of Brighton will benefit from £163,555 of funding thanks to National Lottery funding from Sport England's University Sport Activation Fund.
The Brighton University is one of 54 to receive nearly £10m of funding to help get nearly 180,000 new students playing sport.
The Royal Pavilion and Museums have been awarded more than £2 million - and prestigious Major Partner Museum status - by Arts Council England. This significant award recognises 21 museums across the country that demonstrate excellence and ambition.

But the new pathway means they can get help and support directly via Victim Support, an independent charity for victims and witnesses of crime. RISE, Brighton and Hove's local domestic abuse charity, will continue to offer help and support for gay, bisexual and trans men.
Free specialist advice and information, available to women and men, is also available every Wednesday between 9am and noon at a Domestic Abuse Surgery at Hove Town Hall.
Travellers were moved on from another Brighton landmark after police intervention ahead of a planned football tournament.
A group of about 40 vehicles was ordered to leave Withdean Park after a legal notice - known as a section 61 notice - was served on the unauthorised encampment. Some of the group were moved off Patcham Peace Gardens, off London Road, Brighton;Â about 30 trailers were camped on Waterhall playing fields in Waterhall Road.

Hide AdA bomb disposal unit were called to a house in Brighton after Sussex Police officers found a cache of weapons including a hand grenade.
The force said: 'Police officers got slightly more than they bargained for when they went to a house in Brighton to secure a few firearms. They discovered a haul of 30 rifles and 40 handguns at the home in Larkfield Way.
'The rifles had been decommissioned but many of the handguns were live and loaded. A World War Two hand grenade was also found in the house and the bomb disposal unit were called to make it safe.'
City College Brighton and Hove is to host a recruitment day for people who want to become apprentices.

Hide AdThe event is taking place on tomorrow (Friday, July 4) in conjunction with Mears, the housing and maintenance contractor, which has a base in Moulsecoomb.
Mears is in the fifth year of £200 million 10-year contract with Brighton and Hove City Council during which the company committed to taking on 200 apprentices.

Alice Whalley, 26, will serve as a curate at St Andrew's Church in Moulsecoomb; Kate Lawson will serve as a curate at All Saints in Hove. Gregory Barker, the clmate change minister, spoke during a visit to Shoreham Harbour where he climbed on to the roof of Shed 10 to see the recently installed array of solar panels.

Hide AdStreet-drinkers are now more likely to successfully engage with treatment for their alcohol addiction following the introduction of a voluntary scheme that is encouraging off-licences not to sell high-strength alcohol.
In the first few months of Brighton and Hove's "Sensible on Strength" campaign, 82% of the city's highest-profile street-drinkers have switched to lower-strength alcohol and are more able to engage with agencies.
According to Equinox, the substance misuse and mental health charity, there has been a marked improvement in the lives of the people they are supporting.

Hide AdJesse Wilde, service manager at Equinox, Brighton, said: 'It is now the exception rather than the rule for our outreach workers to see street-drinkers with high-strength cans, which is a complete reversal of the situation 12 months ago."
In 1983, Marian Ferguson and her husband decided to become foster carers for Brian, a young boy with Down's Syndrome.

The Shared Lives team is looking for more carers. It can be either on a full-time, short-breaks or sessional basis.

Brighton's Toy and Model Museum has announced one of the ventures that will form part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2016.
The 'Toys in the Community' oral history project is being funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and will be centred on 25 interviews with people of all ages in the city about their childhood memories of toys they played with.
