There’s something special about celebrating Christmas with friends – and the children in these pictures certainly had plenty to play with.
The photos belong to Eric Dinnair, of Langley Green, and he said they were taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
The party was organised by Eric’s mother and other parents from Irving Walk, Tilgate, and was held at the Shackleton Road community hut.
It wasn’t any old run-of-the-mill Christmas party, as some of the children’s costumes show.
Eric said: “My mum got all the kids in the walk to dress up as different children from all over the world to do a little song or poem as the characters from wherever in the world they came from.
“My mother said it came from a idea that her mother taught her to do as a child.
“All the others kids from the walk met at our house to rehearse each week leading up to the Christmas party.
“My mum carried on doing this for many years until the late 60s, if I remember rightly.”
Of the children in the pictures, Eric could name: Pat Charles, Barry Gascoigne, Alan ‘Geordy’ Smith, Valerie Fry, Anne Banforth, Linda Curry and Patrick Banforth,
He added: “I wonder who is still about now I think the babies would be in there late 50s now as I am 65!”
Do you recognise anyone in these photos? Are any of them still living in Crawley? What are your memories of Mrs Dinnair’s Christmas parties?
