It wanted to be able to take deliveries of stock at its planned store in Eastbourne’s Faraday Close 18 hours a day from 5am, seven days a week.

But after a flood of protest from local residents living in Brampton Road in Hampden Park, Aldi officials backed down this week and instead opted for deliveries between 6am and 11pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am on Sundays.

Campaigners say they were relatively pleased with the compromise.

Aldi was granted permission to develop the former Cosmetica site in March with conditions that deliveries of stock could only be made between 7am and 9pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am-6pm on Sundays.

But in the summer, the chain went back to planners and asked for deliveries to be allowed between 5am and 11pm seven days a week, which sparked protest from residents living nearby concerned at noise.

Planning officers recommended councillors on Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee approve the changes, which members did on Tuesday night at the Town Hall.

A council planning spokesperson said, “The application has submitted a noise statement which concludes the delivery of goods will not have an impact on the surrounding residential properties. Given the separation distances, and that the council does have the power to take action under separate legislation should deliveries result in impacts on the amenity of residents, it is recommended the variation to the condition be granted.”
