All working together is so important

I AM surprised at all the unpleasantness expressed in the letters about Hugh Coster, who, as elected vice-chairman of Civic, has worked for many years to promote the regeneration of Bognor Regis and also represents the concerns of many members.

Kate Whiteley's statement that Civic's views, irrespective of merit, will not be taken seriously, only raises questions about who has made that decision and it will do more harm than good.

It is difficult to imagine how several very tall blocks of flats, the removal of the library away from the town centre, the loss of the theatre and the closure of the seafront road will bring about the desired regeneration.

The leisure facilities we were promised would appear to be disappearing under a heap of flats.

As for Mr Frears' group, their proposal to remove the library to the university campus would deprive many people of one of the only central '˜leisure' facilities available to them.

Surely, regeneration is about improving the town and not the university campus.

The statement that Mr Frears' group retains the recognition of those who count smacks of arrogance.

I believe we will end up with the unsatisfactory proposals currently being promoted unless the public makes it clear nothing should go ahead without the overall support of the majority and definitely not at the behest of a few favoured interest groups and '˜big players' '“ whoever they might be.

WHILE Kate Pollard is right to praise the wisdom of King Solomon (Observer letters), Christ claimed that in Him '˜a greater than Solomon is here'.

Christ gave humanity a vision of Christian community and how to work together for the common good, since each one of us has god-given talents which should be used for the benefit of all.

As we seek a united vision of what is best for Bognor, we should stop trying to decide which vision group is right and which is wrong, since no-one has a monopoly of wisdom.

We all have a contribution to offer in this crucial debate and should cultivate an attitude of humility and mutual respect, so that by sharing insights a common vision for the future of our town can emerge.

To achieve this we need God's help. According to New Testament teaching, '˜if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will given to him' (James 1:5).
