Children from the William Older Playgroup, in Arundel Road, certainly did not monkey around when it came to fundraising – raising an impressive £600 with their effort.

Fiona Carr, playgroup assistant, was thrilled by the cash windfall.

She said: “We were very surprised at how much it raised – it’s almost double what we normally raise, which was fantastic.

“It was a great deal of fun and the children showed great determination in completing the course.”

The youngsters were all sponsored to complete at least five laps of the playgroup’s assault course, which ran through the building and outdoor play area.

The fun-loving competitors, all aged between two and four, were ducking, diving, crawling and climbing over an array of obstacles, which included balance beams, monkey bars, tunnels and slides.

The idea was inspired by David Walliams’s Comic Relief book The Queen’s Orang-Utan.

Comic Relief has raised more than £78million – its highest ever total.
