Anti-crime plan on trial to foil marina thieves

A new scheme has been launched in Bognor Regis to reduce marine equipment-related crime.

The initiative, called marine watch, is aimed at preventing theft of marine equipment and detecting it.

Anyone who owns marine equipment can have it protected by a Smartwater security system.

Smartwater is a colourless liquid which cannot easily be seen with the naked eye and is almost impossible to remove.

The liquid glows when under ultraviolet light, making it easy for the police to detect.

Signs have also been put in place around Bognor Regis Yacht Club advising would-be thieves that Marine Watch is in action and will hopefully act as a deterrent.

PCSO Nick Baker helped launch the project.

He said: "This is a unique project for Bognor Regis and one which I hope will encourage boat owners and marina users to work together with a common aim of reducing crime.

"We also hope to build strong relationships with the marine community, which will allow us to better understand their needs and concerns about marine-related crime."

If the scheme is successful at the yacht club, it may be rolled out to other areas of the town.
