Anti-landfill campaign funds reach new low

THE campaign against a landfill site in Bexhill is flagging as funds run low, the team spearheading Bexhill's protest have warned.

Members of Bexhill Against Landfill (BALI) have fought East Sussex County Council (ESCC) proposals to build a landfill site on Turkey Road for around eight years.

Though much of their work has gone on behind the scenes, the group was catapulted into Bexhill consciousness by a public meeting in November, the third of its kind in the group's history, following ESCC's announcement that Ashdown Brickworks was its preferred option for the new landfill site.

But the group, which has launched a new fundraising campaign, say without the support of Bexhill residents they will be forced to stop their work.

Mike Rosner, head of fundraising for BALI, said: "You may have noticed from recent meetings and press reports that the landfill debate has developed rapidly and that our solicitors have been working full time to meet the necessary deadlines.

"Our Current Account has been so depleted that there is a real danger that we will have to instruct our solicitors to stop work on the landfill brief. This would be a catastrophe as so much pressure has been put on ESCC to have the Ashdown Site removed from the Waste Plan."

A leaflet campaign will soon reach many Bexhill homes with instructions on how to donate, and cheques made payable to BALI can be sent to Pauline Rosner, treasurer, at 16 Hillborough Close, Bexhill. East Sussex, TN39 3TW.

The committee jointly thanked all those who have already contributed. For more information on fundraising contact Mike or Pauline on 01424 845688.
