Appeal for care and safety at Bonfire events

Sergeant Mark Evans of Bexhill’s Neighbourhood Policing Team is appealing to those planning bonfire and fireworks celebrations, or anyone living in the vicinity of an event to take adequate safety precautions.

Sgt Evans said: “Look in the local press for details about any events in your area, and if you are a pet or horse owner, please take all necessary steps to ensure their safety.

“Please be mindful that there may be traffic restrictions to those areas that are having events, often Marshalls to these events are voluntary and work hard to make the events as safe and enjoyable as they can be. Where possible there is a police presence to assist and we are happy to report these often pass without incident.

“These events are for everyone to enjoy and in the interests of safety, no fireworks other than those used by the Bonfire societies are to be used. It is an offence to discharge fireworks in a public place.”

He added: “The clocks change on Sunday October 26, so remember ‘Be Safe Be Seen’, whether using a vehicle, motorcycle, cycling, walking to and from work, and for school children.”
