Crawley Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed to the design concept at its meeting on Wednesday (March 22).

The £2.2m facelift includes a design that blends with Queens Square, improved links with Memorial Gardens and Queensway, new lighting and seating, cycle racks, more litter bins, disabled parking bays, and better vehicle access into Parkside Car Park.

Councillor Peter Smith said: “Improvements to Queensway, The Pavement and Kingsgate will complement Queens Square, transform the area and help give us a town centre to be proud of.

“Our Town Centre Regeneration Plan is moving forward at a great pace and these improvements, along key connector streets, will mark phase two and the continued improvement of our public spaces.”

Work is set to begin in the first half of 2018, subject to planning permission.

Improvements to the 5,500 square metre area were hoped to act as a further catalyst for wider regeneration and investment, said a council spokesman.

Final designs will be submitted to planning later this year following consultation.

A public consultation was held in February and March to find out how people use the space and what they thought of the proposals.
