ARMED ROBBERY: Bus driver interview

THE DRIVER of the bus which carried three armed robbers said he had 'no idea what was happening' when cops piled in.

Martin Wood, 48, of Lingfield, picked up the three armed robbery suspects on his Southdown PSV route through Ifield.

Moments later, armed police stormed the bus at the Ifield roundabout and led the three suspects off while shocked passengers looked on.

He said: "I could see the three guys running along behind the bus and pulled over to let them on. They paid for their fare and went and sat at the back of the bus.

"I didn't think anything of it until all hell broke loose."

"I saw the blue lights behind and moved over to let them go through. All of a sudden they were all around the bus with sub-machine guns. Eight or 10 officers ran on the bus and shouted at everyone to stay still. I thought it must be the three guys at the back of the bus."

He added: "I was fine throughout the whole thing; you're not trained to deal with these sort of things you just have to get on with it.

"The police were so quick and professional that I didn't have to worry about anything.

"The passengers were fine and the police got them off the bus."
