Art course results in giant mural

A huge mixed media mural has been unveiled at a Bognor Regis school.

Headteacher Michele Barnfield performed the ceremony at Michael Ayres Junior School. The eight foot square work of art was formed from 36 panels and depicts a giant double-headed eagle.

It represents the culmination of an ambitious ten week family learning art course during which children took their parents to school to learn art skills together.

The course was run by two members of the school's staff, Sam Lloyd and Damien Ebdon-Walker. They taught the 14 adults and children the techniques they needed.

Liz Sullivan, the family learning co-ordinator, said: 'The parents really enjoyed working with their children on this ambitious project which gave them the freedom to develop their own ideas.'

The mural presides in the school assembly hall overlooking the children each day as they gather together.

The success of the initial art course means the school intends to regularly offer more family learning courses.
