Artworks by a master forger on show in Sussex

An accomplished artist who has been jailed three times for forging famous masterpieces is currently staging an exhibition of his work.

Max Brandrett - dubbed Max The Forger - now concentrates on what he calls ‘fake but legit’ works, examples of which are now on show at Unit 52 - the former Barnado’s shop - in The Martlets, Burgess Hill.

The venue itself is fitting as 70-year-old Max grew up in a Barnado’s home before he started work as an animal helper in a circus, later turning his hand to signwriting and, ultimately, painting.

Among canvases on show at the exhibition - which is on until December 20 - are those in the style of the Italian artist Caravaggio, along with more modern artists Jack Vettriano and Norman Rockwell. Also included in the exhibition - entitled Fakes’ Progress - is a ‘Reubens.’

Max’s works are on sale with prices ranging up to £4,000.
