Barnham and Flansham cycle route named after councillor

A CYCLE route between Barnham and Flansham has been named after the councillor who inspired it.

The 3.6km route has been officially given the title of Whittington’s Way in honour of the leading role played by Derek Whittington in getting it opened.

The path links Church Lane in Barnham and Hoe Lane. It came into use 18 months ago.

Mr Whittington, who is the Conservative county councillor for Fontwell, said: “Getting the route opened was not just about me.

“A lot of thanks must go to Eastergate and Barnham parish councils for all their support and the highways and rights of way officers at the county council.

“It took 13 years to get the route open and I received a lot of moral support in that time.

“What pleases me the most about the path is a lot of families use it in the evening and at weekends, to keep their children on their cycles or scooters away from the traffic on the main roads.”
