Battle Of Britain Commemorative Service

"COURAGE, strength of character, sacrifice and service", are some of the words which the Reverend Daniel Smith used to describe those who made history and fought in the Battle of Britain, at a special commemorative service held at St Andrews Church on Sunday.

In his introduction and bidding, the Rev'd Smith (who is also Hon. Chaplain RAFA Bexhill Branch) said: "We have gathered on this Battle of Britain Sunday to give thanks once again for the liberty which that battle, sixty eight years ago today, preserved for us and for the world."

He added: "Let us remember with gratitude the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women of the Royal Air Force, The Fleet Air Arm and the Allied Forces."

Hymns which were sung during the service included The Royal Air Force Hymn, and God is Our Strength and Refuge (Tune:Dam Busters March).

A collection was taken during the Royal Air Force Hymn, in aid of the RAFA'S (Royal Air Force Families Association) Wings Appeal.

Dignitaries attending the service included town Mayor Patrick Douart, Deputy Mayor Bridget George, Standard Bearer Marshall Ernie Randall MBE, members of Rother District Council, Bexhill Royal Air Force Cadets, Standard Bearers, with representatives of the Royal British Legion, RAFA, RAF and the Royal Naval Association.

Cllr Douart read a moving piece taken from Isaiah in the Old Testament in which is said: "They shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."

In his sermon Rev'd Smith spoke of the, "very real danger facing this country" from German invasion sixty eight years ago, with the shores around Bexhill being targeted, with troop landings planned for West and South West of Lewis on the German High Command invasion list.

And of the courage & strength of character of the RAF during the Battle of Britain, "outnumbered and fighting for their lives".

The service concluded with the National Anthem followed by Colour Parties collecting the Standards and departing.
