Battle resident’s tea party for museum

A tea party given by Wilma Hodge at her Battle home on Wednesday (August 5) added more than £700 to the funds available for Battle Museum’s project to enhance the display of their prize axe head exhibit.

The axe head was found in Marley Lane in the 1950s and has been assessed by experts as almost certainly to have been used during the 1066 battle.

Because it is so old, it needs to be displayed in an environmentally controlled cabinet and supported in a tailor-made cradle.

There are also plans for the display to include an exact replica of the axe head mounted on a shaft. The whole exhibit will be supported with suitable educational material.

Up to £6,000 will be needed for the full project, which is planned to be in place in time for the commemoration of the 950th anniversary of the battle in 2016.

Mrs Hodge said: “I am so glad that my tea party will make a worthwhile contribution to this project which is so important to the town of Battle, though I know there is still a long way to go before all the funds required are in place.

“It was good of so many people to come along and be so generous with their support. And I could not have done it without the help of my friends. I am most grateful to them.”
