Beach clean up events to tackle plastic pollution

It said nationwide, 20,000 volunteers will remove over 100,000 sacks of plastic pollution from beaches and waterways at more than 400 beach cleans around the UK this April.
It held an event at Volks Black Rock Station on Saturday (April 7), but is holding a further four events this month.

Hide AdThe next events are: Palace Pier 2 Pier walk, April 14, from 10.30am to 11am; Hove Lawns Peace Statue, April 14, 11am to 1pm; Big Beach Cafe, Hove Lagoon, April 14, from 1pm to 5pm; and Rottingdean, April 15, from 11am to 1pm.
Volunteers will be asked to ‘record and share’ the avoidable throwaway plastic items they find through social media in a mass ‘citizen science’ evidence gathering effort.
Surfers Against Sewage will submit ‘avoidable’ and ‘single-use’ plastic pollution evidence to a Treasury consultation on plastics and taxes.
Andrew Coleman, SAS regional representative, said: "This is a fantastic chance for people to see first hand why we need a deposit return system for bottles and other litter and why initiatives like Plastic Free Pledge are so vital to rid our beaches and seas of plastic that will kill and harm sea life and end up in our food chain.
