Bell for Gambian school

Pupils sprang into action when Charters Ancaster Preparatory and Nursery School received an email from the Don McMath school in the Gambia asking for help.

Charters Ancaster has supported the Don McMarth school for a number of years, raising funds for building work and sponsoring two children, so when the request came in for a bell to replace their broken one, the children at Charters Ancaster started asking everyone if they had a bell.

An old handbell was found, a little dusty, but after a quick clean is now on its way to the Gambia.

Daisy Chitty, seven years old, said: "It's amazing to think that our bell will travel all that way and be used to tell the children in a school in Africa that it is playtime."

Alexandra Cheeseman, who is eight, added: "I like helping children in another country because they probably do not have as many facilities as we do. "
