Bid to cut road crash toll

Lewes District Council is joining the Police and the Fire Brigade in urging drivers to drive safely and carefully.

Dangerous driving is causing serious concern as it is endangering the lives of people in the district, as well as nationwide.

The A27 is proving an accident hot spot, with numerous car crashes, some of which fatal.

Since 2005 the single carriageway between Polegate and Lewes has witnessed 86 collisions, two of which were fatal. Seventy had caused injuries, and in 14 of the crashes there had been serious injury.

Twenty-one of the incidents had involved drivers following a vehicle too closely, 28 had been caused by travelling too fast and fourwere due to overtaking on double white lines.

Among the top contributory factors associated with the vehicles being involved in such collisions on the A27 were a failure to look properly, to judge other people's paths or speed, carelessness, loss of control, sudden braking, poor manoeuvring, being distracted, tired, or impaired by alcohol.

Most of these factors were avoidable and Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership would like to remind drivers to take all possible precautions before embarking on a car journey and to ensure that they are fit and safe to drive.
