"BNP won't crash debate" says trader chairman

Concerns that the British National Party might gate-crash a political forum being hosted by the Federation of Small Businesses in Bexhill are unfounded, insists the traders' chairman, Brett McLean.

He spoke out after activists claiming to support Hastings United Against Fascism spent time at the weekend handing out leaflets warning of possible Far Right intervention at the event on Thursday.

It is being held at Di Paolo's restaurant in Marina, Bexhill, starting at 7pm.

But Mr McLean said: "I've since spoken to the BNP and have been assured that it won't be in attendance. Nevertheless, we shall be employing a private security firm and liaising with local police to ensure the event passes off peacefully."

Politicians who are due to take part in a debate about Bexhill and Battle issues include Conservative constituency MP Greg Barker and two of his rivals at the forthcoming general election - Labour's James Royston and the Liberal Democrats' Mary Varrall.
