Bognor Regis summer illuminations switched on

A fire juggler, cheerleaders and star guest '“ Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins '“ ensured Bognor's summer light's switch on proved a memorable event.

Hundreds turned out to see the impressive seafront displays and fireworks for what traditionally marks the start of the town's tourist season.

There have been illuminations on Bognor Regis seafront since the 1930s and this year the range of designs did not disappoint with spirals, fountain and palm-tree features.

The organising committee hailed the launch as a success with crowds making the most of the festivities which featured a seafront fairground over the weekend.

Jason Passingham, of the lights committee said: "I'd just like to thank the people of Bognor for turning out to support us and hope that we have lived up to their expectations."

Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins joined mayor of Bognor Eileen Anderson, MP Nick Gibb and Aldwick Parish Chairman Carol Wiseman for the big switch-on.

Chris, who grew up in Brighton and recently visited Bognor for a talk with budding gardeners at Rose Green Junior School, said: "This is the first time I've ever done anything like this and it's a privilege.

"I think the people who put on these lights and do things like the In Bloom gardens are unsung heroes '“ but having a town that looks attractive and has some good lights does make a difference."

MP Nick Gibb said: "I've been coming along to the lights switch-on every year and this is a good way to start the summer season."

The ongoing programme of fundraising events continues throughout the summer with fetes and a range of charity activities to enable the lights to remain a star attraction.
