Bognor's first aiders show they are best

Lifesaving skills again showed Bognor Regis first aiders are among the best in the county.

Three cadets from the town's unit of St John Ambulance won the prize for the best cadet care in the annual Sussex competitions held by the organisation. Annabel Mew (14), Charlotte Medcalf (15) and Kyle Medcalf (10), pictured below, scooped the Bessborough Cup for their ability to treat injuries and handle patients.

They were joined among the prize-winners by fellow Bognor cadets, Andrew Smith (15) and Sarah Lamb (15). They were runners-up for the Hinkley Cup in the first aid category.

Sarah also clinched the Raoul Wallenbery trophy for being the highest individual team scorer.

In the adult categories, Martin Smith and Michelle Farley (both 17) were runners up for the Sir William Gentle Cup given for adult care.

They all go forward to the regional competition being held on May 17 at Guildford. Dr Peter Beaumont, the county medical officer for St John Ambulance Sussex, said: "The judges were bery pleased with the standard of lifesaving skill. Everyone worked hard and deserves recognition."

The contests used the same training methods that medical students learn within medical school. Judging was carried out by a panel of healthcare professionals from St John.

The presentations were made by the national cadet of the year, Tim Strange, the cadet corporal of Horsham Cadet Unit.
