Bogus water
officials warning

SOUTHERN Water is reminding customers in the Rye and Battle area to check the identity of callers to their homes following reports of people calling at homes in claiming to be from the ‘water board’.

Last week there were three incidents in the south east where a gang claimed to be carrying out work for Southern Water.

Southern Water says it takes the issue of bogus callers very seriously and offers the following advice in an attempt to prevent this type of crime.

n Attach your door chain before opening the door to strangers.

n Water company staff always carry identification.

n A company uniform and vehicle logos are points to watch for.

n Remember, if in doubt, keep them out and telephone Southern Water on 0845 278 0845 to confirm their identity.

Employees of Southern Water will be more that happy to wait while their identity is verified.

Southern Water manager Barry Evans said: “It is sad that there are people who prey on people in this despicable way.

“Our engineers will always carry identification and if you are unsure of why they are visiting or requiring access to homes, we ask customers to shut the door first and then telephone us to confirm the caller is genuine. Don’t let callers in before you have done this and telephone 0845 278 0845.”
