Bomb experts called to Billingshurst waste tip

A bomb disposal unit was alerted following reports of a ‘hand grenade’ found at a waste site in Billingshurst yesterday.

The tip closed suddenly yesterday afternoon after what West Sussex County Council described as ‘unexpected circumstances.’

The council, which runs the tip, confirmed today that experts were called in following the discovery of what appeared to be a grenade.

A spokesman said: “The Bomb Disposal Unit attended at 6.30pm yesterday (June 22) and declared the devices to be replica items.

“The site reopened at the normal time of 9am this morning.”
