Bomb found at Littlehampton beach

BOMB disposal experts were called to Littlehampton this afternoon, (Wednesday, February 1) after an old Second World War explosive was found on the town’s beach.

A crew from the Royal Navy bomb disposal team, based in Portsmouth, was dispatched, shortly before 1pm, after a suspicious device was found on the beach, behind the Harbour Park amusement site.

The section of the beach was cordoned off while explosive experts conducted a controlled explosion of the device, in the sea, at about 2pm.

Lieutenant Dan Harridge, officer in charge of the team, said he believed the explosive had originally been a primer used in an anti-submarine mine during the Second World War.

The beach has since been re-opened to the public.
