Buddhist centre open day

Visitors both young and old made the open day at the Maitreya Buddhist Centre in Sea Road one of its most successful events.

Manager Andrew Durling said: "This was the best of all the Open Days we have ever had as the number of visitors was very high, and I and Lam-ma, and the rest of our volunteers were rushed off their feet coping with looking after them all.

"Lots of people tried out our 'taster' meditation sessions, listened to short talks and videos about what the Centre is all about and what it can offer the public, and, of course, enjoyed our free refreshments and the chance to relax and chat in our coffee lounge.

"What impressed me was the fact that so many people asked questions that indicated a deep interest in meditation and what Buddhism was all about; they came wanting answers and information, and that kept me and Lam-ma well and truly on our toes.

"Also, quite a few extra children and their parents joined in with our regular kids meditation class, which just shows that meditation can be a truly family thing and you're never too young (or too old) to start."

Upcoming events at the Centre include a Weekend Meditation Retreat on June 27-28, for an "excellent opportunity for some in-depth meditation practice and for taking a break from the busyness of everyday life."

Each day consists of four meditation session each an hour long. Full guidance will be given by the retreat leader and an opportunity to ask questions and seek advice concerning meditation will be available in between sessions.
