Call for businesses to support A27 campaign

It has called on businesses to complete a ten-minute online survey to help the A27 Action campaign group present its case to the government, calling for improvements to be made.

Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We really want to encourage businesses to take the time to fill in this survey.

“The more examples we can show of how the A27 restricts our local economy from growing, the stronger our case to lobby the government.”

A spokesman for the county council said evidence was already ‘flooding in’ from firms voicing frustrations about how traffic jams affected trade.

He said many businesses had already filled out the survey but there was still time for more to add their voice to the campaign.

The A27 Action campaign group was launched last month to persuade the government to improve the road. It has been promoted by the county council, district councils, businesses and MPs.

The A27 is one of six routes in England being considered for investment by the government.

The other routes are:

- The A303/A30/A358 corridor

- The A1 north of Newcastle

- The A1 Newcastle-Gateshead Western Bypass

- The Trans-Pennine routes

- The A47 corridor between Peterborough and Great Yarmouth.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer will announce which of the six schemes are still in the running for investment in his Autumn Statement.

The West Sussex spokesman added: “If the A27 is on the shortlist, the government is expected to indicate what the preferred route for any improvements will look like and how much it would cost.

“The government would then determine how much funding can be committed.”
