Catsfield

Fete and Flower Show: Only a week until the big annual event – the Catsfield Village Fete and Flower Show on Saturday 1st August, followed by the evening dance held in the Marquee. The Fete starts at 1.30pm and the Show Tent opens at 2pm – 4pm. Schedules are in the Village Stores and entries for the show must be handed to one of the committee members listed on the forms by 6.30pm on Wednesday July 29th. Entries can be staged in the marquee from 8.30am – 10.30am when the tent will be closed for judging. Do enter as many classes as you can and make the judge’s task really difficult to pick a winner! Offers of help with the fete and donations are also needed for the various stalls - bric-a-brac, bottles, books, plants, cakes - anything sellable in fact or suitable for prizes. Please contact Vanessa on 01424 844363 with any offers of help and bring contributions to the field in the morning please or call if you need them collected.

The dance in the evening will again feature ‘The Swing Street Band’ and even if you’re not a dancer, it’s great entertainment and a chance to enjoy a lovely social village get-together. Doors will open at 7.30pm and the band kicks off at 7.45pm- 11pm. You are invited to bring a picnic, but not drink as there will be a licenced bar available.

Dog Fouling: Once again there are complaints that too many dog walkers are not picking up their dog’s poo on the recreation ground. Currently it is the cricket season with children watching the game and using the play area, making it even more important to keep the area free from dog mess, although of course this applies equally in the winter football season too. The Parish Council and the ‘rec’ groundsmen continue to keep under review the right of dog walkers to walk their dogs off the lead. So please, dog owners of Catsfield - there are some repeat offenders who hopefully will read this entry and who know they are - PLEASE don’t spoil the ‘rec’ as a place for responsible dog owners who do ‘pick up their poo’, because we will ALL be banned if you continue in this selfish and inconsiderate manner. You will be depriving not only yourselves of the privilege of using the field, but also elderly villagers who aren’t able to walk too far and for whom the level ground is a great asset.

Cream Teas: The Cream Tea and Craft Sale last Saturday afternoon saw the Village Hall with tables decoratively set with vases of garden flowers, cakes, jam, cream and scones galore, not to mention piles of scrummy cakes and Craft Stalls offering a wide selection of most attractive handmade items. The sun shone and although breezy, it was possible for some of the hardier guests to enjoy their tea in the garden. The afternoon was held to raise money for the Flying Ambulance Service and contributed another £133 to the fund.

Sport: Catsfield lost the toss and Crowhurst decided to put us into bat on a lovely day at our Playing Field with no cold wind for a change. A massive 127 by Tim Pitman inspired Derek Fuller scoring 53 and James Wilson with 48 to a total at tea of 270 for 5. Crowhurst started well with some big hitting, but good bowling by Nick Gurr and others skittled them out, despite an uncharacteristic amount of dropped catches and we won fairly comfortably. It will probably be a different story on Sunday when we play Ashburnham away, usually a very strong team.

Mobile Library: The Mobile Library will be outside the Village Hall in Church Road in its usual place from 11.55am – 12.30pm on Friday next week, 31st July.
