A group of Crawley schoolchildren had a close encounter of the furred kind when they met Larry the Downing Street cat.
The youngsters, from Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Primary School, in Langley Green, were invited to visit the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street by MP Henry Smith.
The children included representatives of the school council, junior road safety team and other pupil groups,
A school spokesman said the trip gave them the opportunity to learn more about some of the key ’British Values’ they had been finding out about this year, including democracy, freedom of speech and justice for all.
Henry said: “It’s always delightful to see the wonder and excitement in children’s faces when taking Crawley schools on a tour of Parliament and Downing Street. It was fantastic to welcome the engaging and polite pupils of Our Lady Queen of Heaven School Council to Westminster.
“I think it’s an important part of my job to show young people where our democracy sits.”
While the Prime Minister was not available to say hello to the children, Larry - a brown and white tabby from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home - appeared for a few minutes before disappearing back into Number 10.
Head boy Jesse Perity joked: “Meeting Larry was a purr-fect end to our trip!”
