The Cissbury Group saw 100 women from Findon Valley, Findon Village, Findon Downs, High Salvington, Clapham and Patching, and Washington WIs meet for lunch and to mark the special occasion, they sang Jerusalem in lieu of Grace.

Jill Schiller, secretary of the Cissbury Group, said: “The lunch was held to celebrate the formation of the WI from 1915 to 2015 and inspiring the women for so many years to learn different crafts, and to make new friends and achieve certain changes throughout the years to enhance the general living standards throughout the country.

“The day was recorded as the hottest one in 2015 since 1976 and we all dressed for the occasion, some of us wearing hats, others fascinators.”

The women mingled with other members from the various WIs and enjoyed a delicious meal of either salmon or chicken with a side salad, followed by either lemon posset or meringue, then coffee and cake.

Mrs Maggie Martin had made the celebration cake using a mixture of fruit cake and sponge cake slices. Portions were given out at the table or on leaving the marquee, and the remainder of the cake was taken to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, near Arundel.

Mrs Beverley Bacon, president of Clapham and Patching WI and chairman for the Cissbury Group, opened the luncheon by welcoming all the institute members present.

She then briefed everyone on the history available on the formation of the Cissbury Group and said that from that date onwards, any further information available about the group will be placed in the archives together with a report on the day’s event, plus photographs taken.
