Clampdown on rogue clampers needed: Greg Barker

There should be a crackdown on rogue clampers, unending road works and unnecessary speed cameras.

Bexhill and Battle MP Greg Barker has added his voice to fellow Tory calls to cut congestion and disruption on the roads.

He said there should be alternative road safety measures, such as Vehicle Activated Signs and better education, rather than fixed speed cameras.

Unaccountable speed camera quangos should also be scrapped with the revenue raised from each of the 64 existing cameras in Sussex published, the MP said.

Mr Barker also wants clearer rules set on the timing of traffic lights to address concerns about lights settings being covertly changed by highways authorities so they are constantly on red.

The MP for Bexhill and Battle also wants to see a reduction in congestion caused by road works and motorway closures following accidents.

Mr Barker said: "Getting around has become a daily grind. Law-abiding drivers have to avoid endless road works, rogue clampers extorting cash and speed cameras designed to raise money rather than improve safety.

"We need to tackle the congestion that is costing our area's economy millions. There should be more openness on how transport decisions are made that affect people's lives, and greater use of technology like Vehicle Activated Signs to cut speeding. It's time for change to get Bexhill and Battle moving."
